FILM PROGRAMME

In addition to our usual festival hub of the CCA, Document is also proud to present films at the GFT and GMAC. Altogether we will be screening over fifty powerful documentaries from international and local film-makers, highlighting human rights issues from around the world to round the corner.

SOY LIBRE – IAM FREE

Document’s opening night film:

“A lie which I have repeated so often in my life that I now believe it to be true- I am free.”

The Cuba of Raoul Castro: a camera glides through the streets of Havana like the eye of a recording angel witnessing moments of interaction in the everyday lives of ordinary people. Off-camera, other voices talk about their feelings, hopes and fears, and the search for personal happiness in a country at a crossroads between the old revolutionary ideals of Fidel and Che and whatever changes the new economic realities of the 21st century will bring.

Faces, voices, sounds. From its dreamlike imagery to the candid insights of the unseen, unidentified speakers, a strikingly beautiful and thoughtful film that becomes a kind of visual poem.

www.soylibre.de

CULTURES OF RESISTANCE

Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace? In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Lara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, travelling over five continents, Lara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change:

In Iran graffiti and rap become tools in fighting government repression. In Burma monks acting in the non-violent tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship. In Brazil musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars. And in the Palestinian refugee camps of the Lebanon, photography, music, and film offer a voice to those who are rarely heard.

Through these stories, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

This screening will be followed by a workshop in response to the film, facilitated by So We Stand.

BERNADETTE – NOTES ON A POLITICAL JOURNEY

Document are delighted to present this new biopic about influential civil rights campaigner Bernadette Devlin McAliskey.

At 21 Bernadette became the youngest ever female MP, an eloquent and uncompromising spirit during tense civil rights conflicts in 1960s Northern Ireland.

Jailed for her part in the Battle of the Bogside she also survived an assassination attempt. The film sees Bernadette reflect upon some of these unforgettable moments in a career which is far from over.

This film will be showing at the GFT to be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Lelia Doolan and a discussion lead by Bernadette on Human Rights, Class Struggle and Social Justice.

HOW TO START A REVOLUTION

How To Start A Revolution is the debut feature film from TV producer and former Herald journalist Ruaridh Arrow. The film is set for its Scottish premiere just ahead of a special screening at the UN Film Festival in San Francisco.

How To Start A Revolution saw Ruaridh travel to Egypt’s Tahrir Square at the height of the uprisings earlier this year. However the main focus of Ruaridh’s journey was a week-long visit to Boston to the offices of US academic Gene Sharp who has advised the architects of non-violent political movements everywhere from Egypt to Eastern Europe.

Ruaridh, 30 of Inverness, said: ‘’It was incredible to be there; I never thought I would see a non-violent revolution up close.

‘’It was also very inspiring to spend a week with Gene Sharp. He is one of the biggest political thinkers of our generation. His techniques are about identifying the pillars of support within a regime and securing their support in order to ensure a successful campaign. That was the strategy which was used in Egypt. It was a privilege for me to tell this story.’’

HOPE, MEMORIES, LOSS & COMMUNITY

Closer to home Glasgow filmmaker Chris Leslie explores the impact of the 2014 Commonwealth Games on one defiant East End resident. Hope, Memories, Loss and Community explores Margaret Jaconelli’s struggle to remain in her home in Ardenlea Street, Dalmarnock. Margaret tried to save her family from eviction while her community was flattened around them as construction of the new Athletes Village got underway. Eventually the family was forcibly removed.

Other films include football satire The Other Chelsea -A Story of Donetsk, Songs From The Nickel, featuring revealing interviews with residents of a downtown LA community, Gazza On Air, Behind The Wire & Zanzibar Music Club

The festival also includes a Young People’s Programme, workshops, talks, debate and a cultural exchange with our twinned city Nuremburg. For this, Andrea Kuhn, Director of Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival and her team come to Document 9 to introduce a film from their festival and lead a Q&A.
MUSIC PROGRAMME

As if that wasn’t enough, this year Document is proud to present, for the first time, a full eclectic music programme featuring some of the finest emerging talent around and some more established artists too to entertain you at the end of each packed day of screenings.

There will be DJ sets in the CCA bar from:

BILLY WOODS

From Melting Pot to Supermax, Billy’s heavenly disco sets are the stuff of Glasgow legend! He is one of the few DJs around who can genuinely lay claim to following in the traditions of true dance floor visionaries such as David Mancuso, Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, Daniele Baldelli, and more recently DJ Harvey.

KORBEN DALLAS OF THUNDER DISCO CLUB

Since its conception in 2009, Thunder Disco Club www.thunderdiscoclub.com have exploded onto the Glasgow club scene, hosting parties in all the top venues and festivals, such as the Art School, Studio Warehouse (SWG3), Electric Frog and most recently, the Sub Club, with a new monthly residency there. Korben Dallas has also played alongside Billy Woods at Supermax and spent part of the summer wooing the crowds at Sonar Festival Barcelona with his distinctive blend of eighties inspired disco and electronica.

Also on the Document musical menu we have performances from the sort of bands that give Glasgow it’s sterling musical reputation. These include:

OLYMPIC SWIMMERS

Ahead of a new mini tour supporting Idlewild, Document are proud to present indie folk heroes olympicswimmers. A Glasgow band that have received critical acclaim from the British music press and created a name for themselves with a haunting mix of lush vocals, atmospheric guitar lines and a pulsing rhythm section, Olympic Swimmers are redefining and stretching the boundaries of contemporary folk music. Their music swells and encapulates the listener creating a truly spellbinding affair.

FALCONRY

Falconry is the guise of John Petrie (formerly of Glasgow psych rockers Prayer Rug and Currently of 60ʼs rock’n’roll revivalist’s Top Dollar). Mixing calypso rhythms and the polyrhythmic structure of afro pop with a synth heavy sound Falconry create music suitable to soundtrack a world music dance party, think Panda Bear and Gang Gang Dance remixed by Jamie XX. After recently supporting Brooklyn blog favourite How To Dress Well at the Arches there has been plenty of hype surrounding Falconry of late, make sure to catch his set at The Old Hairdressers exhibition launch on the 17th October.

NO COMET

No Comet bringing it to a close on the 23rd. With their lush atmospherics and sweeping ambience the Glasgow duo are the perfect act to bring Document 9 to a climactic end. Since forming in late 2010 the band have made a name for themselves on the Glasgow indie scene with support slots for the like of RM Hubbert, Take A Worm For A Walk Week, Happy Particles and Pitchfork.comʼs Best New Music act Juliana Barwick. No Comet’s cinematic style which is similar to that of the quieter parts of Explosions in the Sky, will be a very suitable group to follow The Paddy Hill Award at the closing party. no-comet

PLUS

we are awaiting availability confirmation of a very special guest band who have been keen to collaborate with Document. There’s nothing timid or scared about the bravely honest lyrics and stripped bare emotion of the music these boys produce. Food for the soul it certainly is and not just rabbit food either! Being such a high profile band, they are awaiting word from their record company as to whether they will be required in the studio on the proposed date but all going well they will be delighting fans and new audience alike in the CCA bar so fingers crossed and stay tuned for updates!

DOCUMENT9 ART EXHIBITION

Adding to your sensory overload and taking over the city further (yes we do like to make work for ourselves), we will also be holding the Document 9 Art Exhibition – an art exhibition with a social conscience – at The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow’s hippest new multi-purpose space opposite Stereo in Renfield Lane. The exhibition will open on Monday October 17 and run til Friday October 21st opening from 12 noon to midnight each day.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

OMAR BHATIA

Award winning Glasgow artist Omar Bhatia (recipient of The Skinny’s 2009 Artist of The Year Award and voted in Art World’s Top 20 UK degree shows 2009 for his now infamous “Spureosity Shop” degree show). Omar produces portraits around the concept of a fictitious global family. Having spent time on exchange in Romania, his work often has a gypsy essence to it. Exploring the plight of Roma gypsies further, Omar will be unveiling brand new work which has powerful relevance in light of the current Dale Farm traveller evictions.

SEAMUS MCPHEE

Scottish gypsy traveller, activist and artist Seamus McPhee was born and raised in Perthshire’s controversial Bobbin Mill Tinker Housing Experiment – an attempt by the government and Church of Scotland in 1947 to eradicate Scottish gypsy traveller clans by making them useful to the community and integrating them. Substandard wooden huts with tin roofs, no hot water and no electricity replaced their caravans. Promises were made to upgrade the buildings but were never carried through. Seamus McPhee still lives on the site.

Currently self-employed and a member of SGTLRC (Scottish Gypsy Traveler Law Reform Coalition). McPhee’s art practice draws upon his experience of growing up in the midst of the social injustice represented by the Bobbin Mill experiment. He combines art and activism to disseminate his ideas. The resulting art works operate as integral to his pursuit of cultural visibility and recognition. He was part of the Call The Witness Project at the Roma Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale 2011. Shamus exhibits a series of sketches and paintings of the Scottish Gypsy Traveler community.

THE GLASGOW EDIT OF UNRAVEL

Unravel

The longest hand painted film in Britain (Glasgow extract)

Unravel have run over seventy five workshops in communities across mainland Britain from September 2010 to August 2011 in their attempt to create a hand painted film that correlates in length to the 874 mile distance between Lands End and John O’Groats, where each frame of film corresponds to one metre of the distance.

Shown here is Glasgow’s contribution, created by drawing, painting and scratching directly onto 16mm film.

The work with its accompanying soundtrack of interviews and recordings made in collaboration with the Document 8 is an extract of the full sixteen-hour film that has been made by and for the people of Britain.

http://unravelfilm.blogspot.com/

Chris Leslie is a documentary photographer, film-maker and designer based in Glasgow his work has been exhibited in London, Glasgow and Sarajevo and his photography regularly features in newspapers and magazines.

Hope, memories, loss & community by Chris Leslie documents stories of regeneration and the changing face of Glasgow, including the closure of Paddy’s Market and evictions in Dalmarnock. Using photography, video and audio this is a project aimed at capturing people’s hopes, fading memories, lost livelihoods and the disappearance of homes and communities; issues that can be largely ignored in the utopian goals of regeneration.

How do you fancy a fleeting visit from an international filmmaker? Document 9 is gearing up for our ninth annual festival from Thursday October 20th to Sunday October 23rd. We are currently looking for people who can put up a filmmaker for one, two, three or a maximum of four nights.
Every year Document brings to Glasgow international filmmakers to introduce their work, engage with audiences, meet local filmmakers and take part in our debates and events. It also gives them the opportunity to sample our beloved city.

But we need your help in order to do so! If you would like to do your bit for Glasgow’s only human rights documentary film festival please get in touch by emailing: info@documentfilmfestival.org

With your help we will bring to Glasgow an international contingent of creative radical thinkers, film-makers who are not only fully house-trained but also have something valid to say; the kind of people you don’t mind bumping into at the breakfast table.
